Kathy has over 20 years experience in training, temperament testing therapy dogs, and fostering dogs of all breeds and ages. Her Black Labrador, Velvet, received special recognition from the New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association for their work as a therapy team at Pier 94 in New York City, immediately after the 9/11 disaster. Velvet was also was inducted into the New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association's Hall of Fame - Therapy Dog Category, in 2005 and was the only dog to receive recognition twice from the NJVF for her service as a therapy dog.
Gypsy Lee, a 13 year old Chocolate Labrador who greeted each new visitor with a friendly wag of her tail,, was a demo dog for Mid-Jersey Companion Dog Training Club, and as a Canine Ambassador for the AKC, Gypsy visited local schools to teach children responsible dog ownership. Gypsy joined the therapy group and made many visits to the Veterans' Home in Menlo Park. Gypsy left to join Velvet at the Rainbow Bridge. There never will be another pair like them, and we still miss them more each day.
Li'l Black Bear is another of the resident dogs at Briarhook Acres. His friendly attitude and exuberance is apparent as one enters, greeting new visitors with lots of licks and kisses. He relaxes in his puppy pool and when time permits, enjoys doing what a Lab should do - a long swim in the Nanticoke. His special job is picking up shoes - he'll take them right off your feet for a doggie biscuit!
Our latest addition to our 'gang' is "Briarhook's Miracle of Mikayla". Found in a dumpster at 1 day old, with no mother or siblings, it was doubtful that this Bottle Baby could survive. Mikayla was adopted out through our rescue and returned to us 6 months later - fearful & frightened. Through our dedicated efforts to rebuild her trust, she has become the most social of dogs, has attained her Canine Good Citizen title and received her official AKC Rally Novice and Advanced titles, and completed her CD title in July, 2010. We've begun working on her CDX title, and have qualified for the first leg of her Rally Excellent title. We believe that with constant positive reinforcement and lots of love, there is no limit to what this "Dumpster Dog" can do! She is now known as "Briarhook's Miracle of Mikayla, CD, RA, RN, CGC".
In conjunction with the Red Cross, Kathy has completed Animal CPR training and previously volunteered with Sussex County Animal Association as a foster Mom and Treasurer of the organization. She also held the Secretary position with TheraPet-Inc, and volunteered as Treasurer for Mid-Jersey Companion Dog Training Center.
Kathy is a canine evaluator #4874 for the AKC's Canine Good Citizen program and recently approved as a certified evaluator for Therapy Pets Unlimited.
